The
role of the production companies is to create a platform of sorts, on which
film, television, radio, video and other media types can showcase. The
production company is responsible for paying most, if not all costs; advertising
the media product through television, internet and print etc.; filming the
film, radio show, etc.; promoting the film through competitions and websites;
getting the film into the cinemas.
Production
companies get to work once the final script has been produced by the screenwriters
– this is the pre-production phase. The production company casts actors, crew
are staffed, filming areas are located, sets built etc. Most of the funds are
spent acquiring the talent and crew at this point. After this phase the
production company then moves to the next stage – principal photography. This
is where the product is made the script is only released on a need-to-know
basis to prevent leaks. After the principal photography phase, the next stage
is post production. This phase is usually handled by a post-production company
whilst being overlooked by the original production company. This phase involves
editing, music, visual effects, re-recording of any sound needed in the film.
Marketing also launches during this phase which involves trailers and posters.
Once the product is finished, it is taken over by a distributing company who
then release the film.
Some production companies focus on one specific genre. below are two examples, one of a genre-specific company's logo and one of a general company's logo.
