The Horror character I will be analysing is John Kramer, better known as the Jigsaw killer, or just Jigsaw, from the Saw franchise. John was diagnosed with cancer and an inoperable brain tumour in the first Saw film by the first victim we meet, Dr Lawrence Gordon. This is John’s main motive for capturing and killing his victims. However, Jigsaw does not kill his victims directly; he always puts them in a lethal trap, and forces them to choose life or death. Unlike other serial killers from horror films like Jason or Freddy Krueger, Jigsaw is selective of his victims, and only chooses those who he thinks have taken their lives for granted, such as drug addicts, rogue police officers etc. Kramer has extreme beliefs and believes he is doing good by placing these people in his traps – either they survive and change their ways, or they are killed and there is one less ‘bad person’ in the world.
Jigsaw plans his traps around what he thinks they have done wrong. For example, in the first Saw film, a man who was in one of Jigsaw’s traps had previously tried to kill himself, regardless of the fact that he was perfectly healthy. Jigsaw placed this man in a cage with an exit blocked by razor wire, and gave this man the chance to save himself by cutting his body with the wire to get through.
Jigsaw’s careful planning is similar to the villain from my horror movie trailer, the villain carefully selects his victims and makes sure they fit a general profile
